We’re excited to let you know that today we are releasing our first major update of 2023. We’re calling it Fractal (version 4.1).
All players can earn a stunning new starship, the Utopia Speeder, which allows travellers to skim across planet surfaces at high velocity. We’re also launching a new Expedition – “Utopia” – which challenges players to work together and rebuild an abandoned solar system for the mysterious Utopia Foundation. Other expedition rewards include an exclusive new helmet (the Fearsome Visor), a robotic drone companion and much more.
Switch, PlayStation and Steam Deck all now support gyroscopic controls, making exploring and scanning new discoveries more comfortable and precise than ever.
Speaking of which, the Wonders Catalogue shows off your most incredible discoveries, from tallest mountain to strangest creature, giving you a detailed record of your journey and allowing you to compare your records with fellow travellers.
For Switch players there’s a ton of new content including access to all the Nexus and Quicksilver missions, as well as the “Trace of Metal” story – which includes a drone companion and powerful upgrades for the Minotaur Exomech.
We’ve also overhauled the game’s options for all platforms, introducing a raft of new accessibility features and giving you even more control over the way you play and experience the game.
That’s already quite a large update, but there’s lots more! We’ve always been incredibly passionate about VR. No Man’s Sky is about exploration and there’s nothing quite like exploring the infinite universe in virtual reality. Our game has changed a huge amount since our small team introduced VR support back in 2019, and we were so excited to revisit and overhaul all virtual reality for all players, as well as to add support for PS VR2 which also releases today.
Fractal brings full support for PS VR2 with new immersive controls and next generation visuals, as well as a large range of improvements and quality of life changes for all VR players. Here’s a brief list of some of the features players old and new can expect when slipping on a headset:
Play the entirety of No Man’s Sky in Virtual Reality without compromise, with new levels of immersion.
PS VR2, using the power of PlayStation 5, provides a truly next generation virtual reality experience. Featuring reflections, terrain tessellation, increased draw distance, denser foliage, ultra quality textures and refraction.
PlayStation VR2-specific functionality includes headset vibrations, 3D audio technology and intelligent tracking, haptic feedback and adaptive triggers from the PS VR2 Sense controller and more.
Swap seamlessly between VR and standard gameplay. Continue from an existing save to revisit favourite planets, bases and creatures in full virtual reality.
The HUD and user interface has been completely remade for virtual reality, to ensure every interaction available in the game feels natural and built for purpose. Including controlling Multi-Tool options via a menu embedded on the in-world Multi-Tool; and browsing the quick menu and inventory via a personal wrist-mounted display.
Lift open your starship’s cockpit, then reach out and grab the controls to take flight. Turn around for a full 360° view of the starship and vehicle cockpits, with incredible details only visible in VR.
Many interactions have been given special VR-only options, including: grabbing plants and other collectables with your hands; physically opening the cockpits of ships and exocraft; piloting starships directly with a VR stick/throttle; and punching objects to cause damage.
With complete head and hand tracking, interactions in virtual reality make No Man’s Sky more intuitive, tactile, and immersive than ever. Physically unholster your Multi-Tool from your shoulder. Intuitively aim and fire at targets, or put it away to engage in combat with your fists. Tap a button on your headset to toggle the Analysis Visor, then point towards fauna, flora, and minerals to scan and discover them.
2022 was a pretty packed year for No Man’s Sky with major free updates like Sentinel, Outlaws, Leviathan, Endurance and Waypoint, plus a bunch more of our popular expeditions, whilst also launching on Steam Deck and Switch. We’ve got an even bigger year planned for 2023, with Fractal and PS VR2 support marking just the starting point.
The full patch notes for Fractal are available here.
Thanks again so much for your continued support. It means a lot to us.
Thank you to everyone playing the Holiday 2022 Expeditions Update, especially those taking the time to report any issues they encounter via Zendesk or console crash reporting.
We are listening closely to your feedback, and have identified and resolved a number of issues. These fixes are included in patch 4.08, which will be live on all platforms soon.

In 2021, to close out the year, we re-ran the year’s expeditions in a reduxed format over the holiday season to give people another chance to experience these events and reap the rewards when time is perhaps a little more available. That proved to be very popular so we are pleased to announce that we are doing it again.
Here are the dates:
Expedition 5 (Exobiology): 24th Nov – 8th Dec
Expedition 6 (Blighted): 8th Dec – 22nd Dec
Expedition 7 (Leviathan): 22nd Dec – 5th Jan
Expedition 8 (Polestar): 5th Jan – 18th Jan
Rewards for these expeditions include the Exotic Wingpack customisation, the Helios and Quad Companions, and the legendary Leviathan Frigate – along with much more!
2022 marks our sixth year in the life of No Man’s Sky and it has been one of the busiest yet.
In February, we released our first ever handheld version of No Man’s Sky day and date with Steam Deck. It has been amazing to us to consistently see it in the Top 10 most played games since then.
From that point on, there has been no stopping our small team. Four major updates have dropped (taking our total since launch to 21!)
SENTINEL
No Man’s Sky SENTINEL allows you to fight alongside your own personal robotic companions and battle an array of new foes! Introducing a total overhaul of weapon systems; new lore and stories; all-new Sentinel enemies and combat behaviours; the ability to reprogram and adopt your very own friendly AI drone; and much, much more!
OUTLAWS
With the OUTLAWS update comes the opportunity to be an interstellar rebel! Introducing outlaw systems; the ability to recruit your own squadron of pilots; improved space combat; a stunning Solar Sail Starship, and much more!
ENDURANCE
No Man’s Sky’s 20th free update, ENDURANCE, reimagines the experience of being a freighter captain, with a total rework for space bases that allows you to build visually spectacular structures upon your very own capital ship.
WAYPOINT
WAYPOINT, No Man’s Sky’s 4.0 update, is an overhaul of fundamental gameplay elements including game modes, inventory size and usability, milestones, journey cataloguing and much more!
COMMUNITY EVENTS
We continued with the ever-popular community missions (and the associated rewards and Twitch Drops), clocking up 4 expeditions, including the gargantuan Leviathan.
NINTENDO SWITCH
We also welcomed a swathe of new Travellers into the game when we performed a minor miracle by releasing the Nintendo Switch version in what people are calling one of the best ports for the platform:
…COMING SOON…
In addition to all that, we also found time to announce that No Man’s Sky is in development for macOS and PlayStation VR2, the latter coming as a free update in February 2023 day and date with the PSVR2 hardware.
Community Research
Polo’s synthetic companion, having concluded their cultivation of the plantable clumps of Cloven Paw, Ribbon, and Antler grass, has now turned their efforts toward developing a new cape for Travellers: the Titan Worm Cape.
“The worm lord towers above the dusty earth; its flesh becomes the sky.”
The Quicksilver Companion requests assistance in collating data from Nexus missions to contribute towards their research. Progress towards unlocking these exclusive decorations can be viewed in the Mission Log, at the Quicksilver Bot’s kiosk, or at the Galactic Atlas site.
Community Spotlight
There is so much creativity in the community that it’s always tough to choose what to spotlight – but to share a few of our recent favourites…
These super cute renditions of Ares, Helios and Eos are by u/H3M4D.
u/ParanormalRedBeard painted this freighter in traditional acrylics – we love the nebula colours!
u/u_maxerainna drew this lovely scene of two Travellers sitting side by side.
This dramatic and imaginative scene is by u/vestele8 – created for a fellow explorer!
Finally, we were blown away by this super cool Korvax Halloween costume shared by u/killerkyguy, and modelled by their 7-year-old!
Your screenshots keep us motivated! Thank you for sharing these lovely shots, @pachafly, @Westlyn, @ZetaReticulanWeirdo and @StarDrifter420.
Development Update
Plans are well underway for 2023, and we look forward to sharing what we’ve been working on in the new year!
Today, we are releasing update 4.07, which includes the Redux editions for the expeditions, as well as a number of stability and gameplay fixes.
Our journey continues.

Community Research
The Quicksilver Synthesis Companion, perpetually fascinated by biological matter, is busy synthesising seeds for a number of plantable grass clumps: Tall Spikegrass, Short Spikegrass, Flatblade Grass, and Looping Grass.
Completing multiplayer missions from the Nexus will contribute towards the Bot’s efforts. Acquiring these exotic plants with Quicksilver will allow them to be planted around habitable bases.
Progress towards unlocking these exclusive decorations can be viewed in the Mission Log, at the Quicksilver Synthesis Companion’s kiosk, or at the Galactic Atlas site.
