Hello everyone,

Thank you to everyone playing the Companions Update, especially those taking the time to report any issues they encounter via Zendesk or console crash reporting.

We are listening closely to your feedback, and have identified and resolved a number of issues. These fixes have been combined into patch 3.22, which will be live on all platforms today.

Patch Notes

Fixed a crash that could occur when loading creature or companion textures in multiplayer.
Fixed a crash that could occur when renaming a companion on Xbox.
Fixed an issue that could cause the wrong companion to be renamed when renaming a companion.
Fixed an issue that prevented personal items such as ships/freighters/Multi-Tools and companions from being renamed on PlayStation 5.
Other player’s companions will no longer collide with you in multiplayer.

All companions now correctly defend their owner when attacked by a hostile creature.
Fixed an issue that prevent creatures from being harvested by the Livestock Unit.
Fixed an issue that could cause robotic companions to eat pellets rather than ion batteries.
Fixed an issue that caused companion species to be listed incorrectly when viewed in the Companion Manager.
Fixed an issue that caused the hostile aliens found inside derelict freighters to immediately despawn.
Fixed an issue that caused your own companion’s information to be displayed when viewing another player’s companion through the Analysis Visor.

Fixed an issue that could cause companion eggs received from Xbox players to fail to hatch.
Fixed an issue that could cause overly dramatic camera shake to occur when the sandworm is spawned.
The Living Ship can now be repaired without needing advanced bait.
Fixed an issue that could occur when rendering trails in VR.
Fixed an issue with cloud rendering when taking screenshots in VR.
Fixed a texture rendering issue.

Fixed a rare crash that could occur when viewing creatures in the Discovery Page.
Fixed a PC-specific memory leak that could occur when alt-tabbing or changing resolution.
Fixed a PlayStation 5 specific GPU crash.
Fixed a number of crashes related to terrain rendering.

We will continue to release patches as issues are identified and resolved. If you experience any issues, let us know by submitting a bug report.

Hello Everyone!

This week, we introduced a feature to No Man’s Sky that we – and many of you – have wanted for a long time: alien creature companions!

Explorers of No Man’s Sky have always been drawn to the strange, vibrant and often bizarre creatures inhabiting its infinite worlds. However, until now, face-to-face interactions with those creatures have been relatively limited, with friendships only lasting as long as a stack of Creature Pellets. We wanted to create an opportunity for players to form deeper, long-lasting bonds with the fauna they encounter along their journey.

The team has had a lot of fun putting this update together, and it has been so fulfilling to see the community now flying out into the universe to adopt all variety of creatures: the cute, the majestic, and the weird. Starting 2021 with such a playful addition to the No Man’s Sky universe has been a great feeling!

This week, we also launched a new t-shirt design in our merch store, featuring the classic Atlas Rises cover art. We’re really pleased with how they turned out! These special shirts are limited edition, and will only be available for the next 13 days.

Last year, we were thrilled and overwhelmed to win four awards for No Man’s Sky, and already this year we are incredibly proud of our Last Campfire team for being nominated for three awards! The Last Campfire is up for the SXSW Indie Game of the Year, and the Pocket Gamer Best Apple Arcade Game and Mobile Game of the Year!

The team has been working quickly to address any issues in the Companions update, and today we have released a collection of fixes and improvements, 3.2.1. This update is available now across all platforms, and the release notes are available here.

Community Spotlight

The highlight of our week has been seeing the variety of creatures players have been adopting as companions! In celebration, we’ve gathered together a collection of some of our favourite shots.

Community Research

Nada and Polo are amazed and delighted by all the strange fauna now entering their anomalous home! They also report impressive numbers of travellers contributing research to the Anomaly over the past few months.

The Quicksilver Synthesis Bot has analysed the data collected from a multitude of planets and generated a number of new exotic base parts: the sentient Vigilant Taro, the thorny Protea Wheel, and the mysterious Chitinous Cage…

The Plate Stem, Compound Bulb, and Void Husk are also now available from the Space Anomaly. All of these curious vegetative growths are safe for domestic planting, though the Husk can be heard whispering a faint song, as though still connected to some distant chorus…

Three new player titles are also available from the Quicksilver Bot: “The First”, “Simulated”, and “The Notorious” – for explorers who wish to muse upon their place and reputation in the universe.

More recently, inspired by their very first glimpse of animal lifeforms, the Synthesis Bot has now begun to synthesise three exclusive companion accessories: the Rounded Laser, Movement Tracker, and Energy Coil.

Progress towards unlocking these exclusive Companion Appearance Enhancements can be viewed in the Mission Log, at the Quicksilver Synthesis Companion’s kiosk, or at the Galactic Atlas site.

Development Update

We have another packed year planned for No Man’s Sky, and it’s exciting for us to think ahead to everything we have in store. Thank you so much for the enthusiastic and positive response to the Companions update – it means the world to us to see folks enjoying the game.

We are listening closely to your feedback, and have identified and resolved a number of issues. These fixes have been combined into patch 3.21, which will be live on all platforms today.

Patch Notes

Fixed a crash that could occur when reading the text at some specific interactions, primarily distress beacons.
On PC, fixed a crash that could occur when loading creature textures. This fix will be rolled out to other platforms as soon as possible.

Aggressive companions will now correctly attack hazardous plants.
A number of creature behaviours have been rebalanced to better match personality traits.
Fixed a number of issues that caused players to appear in the wrong position when riding creatures.
Fixed an issue that could prevent a small number of creatures from being customised.
Improved the positioning of accessories on some four-legged creatures.
Fixed an issue that caused some companions to only mine objects that were very close to them.
Fixed a number of issues with the way companions aimed their mining lasers.
Fixed a bug that could allow companions to attempt to locate a building while not on a planet.

Fixed an issue that could very occasionally cause creatures to use speech options from an incorrect personality type.
Introduced a number of tutorial hints for the first time players who use the Egg Sequencer.
Fixed an issue that caused missing controller icons to appear when riding a pet using Vive controllers.
Fixed a number of creature animation glitches that could occur in multiplayer.
Fixed a glitch in the sleeping animation for blob-like creatures.

Fixed an issue that could cause companion summoning icons to render incorrectly.
Fixed an issue that caused inconsistent colour formatting in companion speech.
Fixed a number of issues with companion particle effects.
Fixed a number of issues related to network syncing creature interactions.

Hello Everyone,

Our tiny team is excited to let you know that our first free update for 2021, the COMPANIONS update, is available to download from today, free for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Win 10, Steam, Steam VR, GOG, Xbox One and XboxS/X players!

Every planet you land on in No Man’s Sky is full of varied creatures, but as wild animals players often didn’t get to spend much time up close with them. Our creatures are weird, vibrant and surprising, and we wanted to give them a starring role in this update. With the COMPANIONS update, players can now tame, breed, train and even speak to the creatures they encounter.

Travellers are now able to adopt the creatures they encounter and form close bonds with them. They will travel side-by-side with you as you adventure through the universe both as a friend and as a valuable aide on your voyage. Train them to scan for resources, mark out hazards, provide light, hunt dangerous fauna, find settlements, excavate buried treasure or even mine for materials with their own shoulder-mounted mining lasers.

If properly nurtured, your companion will lay eggs which can be collected and incubated. Watch in wonder as the new-borns hatch and grow from babies to full-grown adults! Or use the Space Anomaly’s new Egg Sequencer to genetically modify your companion’s eggs into ever-wilder species.

There are a wide range of customisable accessories and decals if you want to give your companion a unique look. And if you’ve bred a rare and noteworthy creature? It could be really valuable and sought-after. Why not trade their eggs with fellow Travellers?

Creature personalities are defined by their species and ecosystem, such that no two creatures are alike, and their personalities develop further as you deepen your bond with them. Your faithful friend will roam the planet with you as you explore, and can be patted, fed and played with. Upon encountering other Travellers and their companions, they may become frightened, playful or even aggressive, based on their own unique personality.

Every adopted creature is equipped with a neural harness that connects directly to the Exosuit. Your companion’s innermost thoughts will be translated and sent directly to your internal communication channels. Feel the connection with them grow as you play with them, feed them, and go on adventures together.
As an added bonus, the update will bring significant improvements to load and warp times for PlayStation 4 players.

This proves to be a very exciting year for No Man’s Sky and we can’t wait to show you what else we have planned on the roadmap.
